EXCEPTIONAL OPPORTUNITY TO WORK IN A CGIAR CENTER’S SENIOR MANAGEMENT POSITION FOCUSED ON MAKING FARMING AND AGRIBUSINESS DEVELOPMENT IN DRYLANDS

  The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) is a non-profit, non-political organization that conducts agricultural research for development in the drylands of Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Covering 6.5 million square kilometers of land in 55 countries, the semi-arid or dryland tropics has over 2 billion people, and 644 million of these are the poorest of the poor. ICRISAT and its partners help empower the people of the semi-arid tropics to overcome poverty, hunger, and a degraded environment through better agriculture. ICRISAT is headquartered in Hyderabad, Telangana State, in India, with two regional hubs (Nairobi, Kenya and Bamako, Mali) and country offices in Niger, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Ethiopia and Mozambique. ICRISAT was founded in 1972 by a consortium of organizations convened by the Ford and the Rockefeller foundations. Its charter was signed by the FAO and the UNDP. Since its inception, its host country India has granted a special status to ICRISAT as a UN Organization operating in the Indian territory making it eligible for special immunities and tax privileges. ICRISAT is led by a full-time Director General under the overall guidance of an international Governing Board. It is a member of the CGIAR, which unites organizations engaged in research for a food-secure future. The position reports to the DDG-R and is based at ICRISAT HQ in Hyderabad, India.  Research Program Director – Asia The primary responsibilities are as follows: Represent ICRISAT in the Asia region through liaison with governments, pan-Asian networks and authorities, organizations, and initiatives.
  • Enhance partnerships in the Asia region, especially with regional/sub- regional organizations, national agricultural research, and extension systems (NARES), non-governmental organizations and the private sector.
  • Contribute to the strategic management and leadership of the Institute.
  • Contribute to delivering on ICRISAT’s Strategic Plan, Theories of Change and Country Strategies through professional research management and leadership that prioritizes and focuses the Institute’s global research for development programs.
  • Lead, coordinate, review and monitor the research activities in Asia, including resource mobilization, annual budgeting, research planning, priority assessment, proposal development, partnership relations, staff evaluation and research reporting.
  • Lead the research effort of the Institute in understanding the challenges faced by farmers and communities of the semi-arid tropics of Asia and deliver a coherent research for development agenda for this region.
  • Participate in the ICRISAT Research Committee that formally drives the Institute’s research agenda and so ensure science quality and research excellence across the Institute and especially within the Asia Program.
  • Nurture and sustain internal cross-Program interactions and teamwork, working closely with other Directors and leaders in ICRISAT to ensure strong support for and engagement with the implementation of research activities globally.
  • Assist in public awareness activities and greater visibility of ICRISAT in the region.
  • As part of ICRISAT’s broad partnering programs, represent the Institute in engagements within the CGIAR Research Programs (CRPs) and other CGIAR platforms.
  • Contribute strongly to ICRISAT in the context of the changing CGIAR environment, working within the positive engagement of ICRISAT in the One CGIAR, including country engagement in Asia.

Candidate Profile The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of the following skills, knowledge, experience, and personal characteristics:
  • PhD in Agricultural or Plant Sciences, Development Studies, or related fields.
  • Work experience of at least 15 years in international agricultural research for development with high levels of quality research outputs.
  • Proven capability to manage a large research program, including all aspects of project management: managing budgets and staff, building, and managing partnerships, monitoring, and evaluating impacts and leading a diverse team.
  • Experience in systems research where multiple stakeholders, including public policymakers, the private sector and agribusiness are involved in achieving research outcomes.
  • Adaptability – ICRISAT is going through a process of change and requires commitment and flexibility.
  • Experience in addressing governance, institutional and market aspects of agriculture with examples of successful research and development interventions.
  • Demonstrated commitment to mentoring of staff, a safe workplace and protection of the environment.

The Platform is part of the new CGIAR portfolio of research programs and platforms (www.cgiar.org/our-strategy), and is led by the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center, known by its Spanish acronym, CIMMYT®, a not-for-profit research and training organization with partners in over 100 countries (www.cimmyt.org).   Senior Market Strategist for Steering Breeding Product Profile Designs The Excellence in Breeding (EiB) Platform is recruiting an innovative Senior Market Strategist specializing in breeding product profile designs. EiB supports breeding programs targeting Africa, Asia and Latin America to adopt best practices and technologies to improve rates of genetic gain and variety turnover, for impact on livelihoods, food and nutrition security, and climate change adaptation. The Senior Market Strategist will align and lead the knowledge sourcing efforts of steering breeding teams to utilize more targeted information in the development of equitable and data-based product profiles that are aligned with farmer and consumer needs and the drivers of variety adoption. The candidate will have the competency and design tools to synthesize data of a well-balanced and gender-inclusive product profile, describing the traits and features of the varieties or germplasm that will be developed by the breeding program. The improved varieties and and/or parental lines developed aim to successfully replace currently grown varieties, whilst also satisfying requirements such as gender needs, processing qualities, human nutrition, and genetic diversity of the local germplasm base. Replacing current market dominating varieties will require development of extensive understanding and data assimilation of the drivers of variety adoption, including understanding the needs of food crop value chain actors (e.g. seed suppliers, farmers, processors, and final consumers). The successful candidate will primarily be coordinating with CGIAR centers who have scientists performing this research and guide the product profile designs and be impact focused. The position will be based at either CIMMYT headquarters in Mexico, or at the ICRAF campus in Nairobi and will involve significant international travel.   Specific duties:
  • Develop methods and approaches to understand the drivers of variety adoption and to facilitate the design of product profiles which will guide the development of improved varieties.
  • Continual engagement with internal and external partners to influence strategies and decisions executed.
  • Develop strategies and processes to help breeders define adoption criteria for new varieties.
  • Develop innovative analytical tools for extracting and assimilating currently available information in collaboration with gender, socioeconomic and marketing experts across the CGIAR centers to understand the drivers of variety adoption and to inform the development of better product profiles.
  • Ensure human nutrition, socially inclusive needs, and circumstances, particularly of women and youth in rural households, are considered in the design of product profiles.
  • Coordinate with the Module 1 Lead, the breeding teams and their management to ensure available data sources are effectively used to design product profiles to set clear breeding objectives and all relevant breeding program decisions are data-based and specify potential impact.
  • Regularly lead work with other modules, represent EiB within this skill area and contribute to the work of others in EiB modules, ensuring interconnectedness across programs and within the team.
  • Frequent contact across internal and external partnerships, including leads at partner Centres, to persuade partners to commit to change
  • Produce a training strategy: develop and oversee work plan and budget
  • Lead and contribute to coaching and mentorship activities for EiB partners in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
  • Contribute to the EiB Product Design and Management module annual and multi-year work plan development, execution, and reporting, and co-manage associated budgets.
  Required academic qualifications, skills and perspectives:
  • MBA/DBA or PhD. in business development, marketing and/or socioeconomics from a recognized institution, or M.S. with equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in the agricultural-market sector. Commercial experience will be viewed favorably.
  • Experience in collection, analyses and interpretation of market intelligence data; awareness of the challenges of collecting such data and of variety replacement in low- and middle-income countries.
  • Familiarity with the seed sector/seed value chains and experience with defining breeding product profiles is desirable. Awareness of marketing methods, including requirements for variety adoption and marketing methods, of new varieties to developing world farmers.
  • Commitment to social inclusiveness, including awareness of the role women have in variety uptake, challenges associated with generating market intelligence pertaining to women’s needs and the role in achieving greater household food security and farm incomes.
  • Desired skills:
  • Ability to strategically and persuasively engage partners across disciplines and Centres to help guide development of product profiles which set objectives for data-driven breeding programs.
  • Interpersonal aptitude to respectfully and tactfully present a paradigm shift and ensure adoption of new operating processes such as collection, synthesis and use of socio-economic data for breeding targeting
  • Ability to work across internal and external partnerships, including leads at partner Centres, and various disciplines (e.g. breeding, gender, social, communications) to ensure partners commit to and adopt changes within breeding programs
  • Demonstrated experience of synthesizing multi-disciplinary data (marketing, socio-economic etc.) to define ideals for variety replacement
  • Ability for creative and strategic thinking in identifying and adapting approaches
  • Research acumen to understand problems, develop tools and analyses of extracting relevant information from market participants, and assimilate and interpret information for developing solutions to problems.
  • Demonstrated prowess and enthusiasm to work in multidisciplinary and multi-cultural environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, develop and oversee workplans and budget
  • Results focused and pragmatic approach to multidimensional data assimilation.
  • Proficiency in using data and statistical software at an advanced level, and ability to develop tools
  • Teaching, training and capacity development; ability to work effectively within a product-oriented perspective, while engaging and motivating organizations/stakeholders disinclined to change.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills in English. Fluency levels sufficient for training, dialog and persuasion.

EiB supports breeding programs targeting Africa, Asia, and Latin America to adopt best practices and technologies to improve rates of genetic gain and variety turnover, for impact on livelihoods, food and nutrition security, and climate change adaptation. The Module Lead for Breeding Product Design and Management will guide and advise EiB partners to adopt efficient, product-oriented, and demand-led breeding pipelines. The Module Lead will provide wide-reaching leadership across CGIAR centers and national partners in developing market-driven product pipelines, serving resource-constrained farmers in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. This is one of five Module Leads covering the full spectrum of breeding activities and technologies and reporting to the EiB Deputy Director. The role sets the direction of Module 1 and coordinates with EiB partners to implement best management practices in their product development pipelines. The Module Lead will work closely with the EiB Senior Market Strategist, various teams across the CGIAR, and national breeding teams (NARS) to ensure that:
  • Product Profiles are based on market intelligence and data, reflecting what drives variety adoption and characteristics which can be translated to quantitative breeding targets, resulting in greater impact.
  • Partnerships with multidisciplinary teams of scientists are developed and interactions with NARS, industry partners and end users (farmers, traders, consumers, etc.) from different organizations are established to design well-defined and clearly prioritized Product Profiles for the Target Population of Environments.
  • Advancement processes through delineation of well-founded stages and gates are conceptualized, taught and coached to all breeding program contributors, and progressive stages of the breeding process are based on reliable market, trial data and impact analysis (genetic gain and variety turnover).
  • Key indicators are aligned with breeding program objectives and that the programs’ performance are regularly tracked.
  • Effective methods are established for routine assessment of genetic gains and progress toward key indicators and increased variety turnover are measured.
  • There is transparency of breeding program outcomes to breeding teams, research managers and funders.
  EiB is seeking for an accomplished expert who has broad understanding and a demonstrated track record in data-driven optimization of breeding product designs for delivering maximum impact, to produce improved varieties, preferably in several crops. This lead person requires solid professional understanding of breeding processes, product development and management concepts, with a focus on modern and proven practices. They will be responsible to introduce these concepts and transform product development at public breeding institutions through leading multi-disciplinary teams in implementing industry-recognized practices.  As Module 1 Lead they will have a prominent role in spreading the mission of EiB, which is to lead, co-ordinate and support improvement of CGIAR and NARS (National Agricultural Research & Extension Services) crop breeding. The location of this position will be determined through consultation with the selected candidate: either CIMMYT headquarters in Texcoco, Mexico, or the ICRAF campus in Nairobi, Kenya. This position will involve significant international travel.   Specific duties:
  • Serve as the key point person for EiB on its modernization efforts in order to influence decisions executed by partners, leading this process for EiB.
  • Engage directly with the EiB Senior Market Strategist, the other EiB modules leads, and broad CGIAR and NARS teams to define and develop high level processes and procedures to effectively and transparently conceive and deliver market demanded germplasm products to farmers, through:
  • Supporting breeding as a production line and making it more effective across partners.
  • Development of high-quality product profiles, based on market intelligence and with input of cross-functional and multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Demand-driven, product-oriented breeding activities based on the product profiles.
  • Stage gate variety advancement processes.
  • Data-driven annual advancement meetings.
  • Annual assessment of genetic gain and breeding program performance against key indicators relating to genetic gain and variety turnover.
  • View breeding as a production line and make it more effective. Define stages and gates together with the breeding group for product advancement and set up a process to deliver improved varieties or germplasm to partners or the end user.
  • Develop tools to support breeding teams and managers with the above activities.
  • Provide mentorship and consultation for the partner breeding community.
  • Prepare training strategies and materials.
  • Lead and contribute to virtual and face-to-face training and mentorship activities targeted at EiB partner breeding teams in various world regions.
  • Develop the annual and multi-year work plan for Module 1, including execution, reporting, and management of associated budgets.
  Required academic qualifications, skills, and attributes:
  • PhD. in agricultural or horticultural sciences, plant breeding, business process management or MBA/DBA or M.S. with equivalent professional certification and experience in the seed business.
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in the seed business or related disciplines. Certification in project management or business process management, while not essential, would be viewed favorably.
  • Managerial experience in the commercial breeding sector is required; experience in a high functioning breeding organization is very desirable.
  • Understanding of the unique challenges of breeding program management as it relates to markets of many sizes and crop types for developing world markets is a plus.
  • Budget and time management skills.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary and multi-cultural environment.
  • Excellent oral, written and presentation skills in English.

Il/elle est redevable de l’impact et de la performance des actions de communication, tous médias confondus, au soutien de nos activités terrains, plaidoyer, collecte et partenariats entreprise ainsi que de l’image du WWF France et de la notoriété de la marque.   Il/elle participe aux groupes de travail du réseau WWF International et est porteur de la voix du WWF France auprès du WWF International pour les sujets de son ressort..   Priorités du poste: Mission 1 : Participation et leadership au sein du comité exécutif
  • Au titre de membre du comité exécutif, être co-créateur et co-responsable de l’orientation stratégique du WWF France ; diriger et/ou contribuer à la mise en œuvre des priorités stratégiques et des projets internes transverses.

  Mission 2 : Diriger le développement stratégique, opérationnel & financier de la Direction de la Communication
  • Sur la base de son expertise, de sa vision globale des enjeux médiatiques et digitaux et de son expérience avérée en management, piloter l’orientation stratégique de la Direction de la Communication du WWF France
  • En lien avec la DG et le ComEx, définir la stratégie pour développer la notoriété de la marque ainsi que les activités du WWF France et assurer sa mise en œuvre sous forme de plan d’actions,
  • Définir les orientations stratégiques en matière de communication tous canaux confondus (branding, médias, presse, réseaux sociaux, digitaux, édition, WAG – Application numérique) du WWF France, élaborer le plan de communication annuel, et ses priorités et en assurer la mise en œuvre,
  • Définir la stratégie de marque en cohérence avec la stratégie de marque du WWF International et en assurer la mise en œuvre,
  • Développer les outils innovants afin de maximiser et d’amplifier les messages et actions du WWF,
  • S’assurer la cohérence des messages destinés au public externe quel que soit l’émetteur et le canal de communication,
  • Faire le lien avec la stratégie de communication du WWF International et en assurer le déploiement national le cas échéant.
  Mission 3 : Management de l’équipe
  • Diriger et développer l’équipe de la Direction de la Communication selon une approche de la gestion par résultats et la gestion des risques.
  • S’assurer que les équipes communication coopèrent avec les autres départements, et travaillent lorsque pertinent sous mode Projet avec les autres Directions

  Mission 4 : Maximiser l’impact, la qualité et l’efficience de la marque et de ses actions
  • S’assurer de la qualité stratégique des actions de communication et de leur cohérence avec la stratégie globale du WWF France.
  • Déployer l’ensemble des moyens de communication dans le cadre de campagnes de marque en 360° (mobilisation citoyenne, médias et relations presse, évènementiel, digital et multimédia, édition).
  • S’assurer que des dispositifs pertinents et robustes de suivi et évaluation de l’impact médias des actions du WWF France sont implémentés afin d’assurer le pilotage des actions de communication du WWF France,
  • Prévenir toute action de communication et/ou réaction des médias et journalistes ayant un impact sur la notoriété de la marque et sur la légitimité des actions du WWF

  International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is a not-for-profit institution that generates agricultural innovations to meet Africa’s most pressing challenges of hunger, malnutrition, poverty, and natural resource degradation. Working with various partners across sub-Saharan Africa, IITA improves livelihoods, enhance food and nutrition security, increase employment, and preserve natural resource integrity. Implementing these plans will require a strong focus on step changes to improve the efficiency of breeding and delivery of increased rates of variety turnover and genetic gain. This has been identified as a high priority by IITA. To achieve this, IITA seeks an experienced product manager with expertise in strategic product decision-making, including market analysis and the development of product concepts that deliver unique value based on customer demands. Through effective communication and dissemination of product and market information between clients and the product design teams, this position will ensure a continuous improvement process with a better focus of breeding product design on the needs of the market. It will also contribute to better targeting of variety development and supply of high-quality planting materials in a timely and effective manner. The appointee will report to the Head of Breeding and work closely with leaders of the crop breeding teams.   Product Manager for Crop Variety Development The Product Manager will play a cross-functional leadership role, most notably between breeding teams, clients and market stakeholders. S/he will also be part of a network with other product managers inside and outside IITA (coordinated by the CGIAR Excellence in the Breeding platform). The Product Manager will:
  • Provide market intelligence and help with prioritization of breeding objectives to meet market needs.

This is a Senior level appointment and the appointee will report to the Director for West Africa.   Head of Farm Management The Head of Farm Management will manage the research farms and plant growth facilities of IITA in support of activities of the Institute’s crop breeding programs. S/he will have responsibility for all IITA research farms and plant growth facilities in sub-Saharan Africa, with 70% of his/her time in West Africa (especially at Ibadan, Ikenne and Kano stations in Nigeria) and 30% at IITA stations outside West Africa (e.g. in Zambia, Tanzania, Uganda). With support from station farm managers/superintendents and other staff, his/her activities will include the following:  
  • Lead research farm teams in the implementation of field operations of breeding programs in collaboration with breeding team leads.
  • As lead for a Western Africa support network for field operations, develop a plan for running trials (at cost) for other CGIAR centers and national research programs and identify opportunities for sharing services with them.
  • Develop and implement improvement plans for irrigation and soil and pest management.
  • Ensure organization and regular maintenance and repair of farm machinery and equipment.
  • Ensure monitoring and control of farm operations efficiency.
  • Optimize procedures for material handling and workflow for seed processing and packaging.
  • Manage greenhouse equipment, fertigation, pest management, and environmental controls.
  • Define an investment plan for research farms and plant growth facilities in consultation with the head of breeding and breeding team leads.
  • Contribute to resource mobilization for upgrading farm infrastructure and equipment.
  • Manage the human and financial resources of the Research Farms Unit.

  The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) is a non-profit, non-political organization that conducts agricultural research for development in the drylands of Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. He or she should have the capacity to develop and oversee performance management processes to support a high-performing culture at an individual and organizational level. He or she should also develop and implement an effective reward and recognition strategy to support the strategic objectives of the organization and to motivate staff. The Director of Human Resources will also oversee the implementation of human resources management at all ICRISAT locations to ensure that the design and application of the approved personnel policies are consistent with the needs and expectations of staff, as well as the local values, practices, and regulations. The new director is expected to advise and guide Regional Directors, Country Heads, and other Unit Heads on complex and sensitive organizational and people issues to enable senior management to take appropriate action. Other important HR functions include negotiating and managing the terms of outsourced services to ensure value for money and adherence to standards, managing the HR team to deliver quality and customer-focused services, and developing effective working relationships with Staff Council and other staff representatives to ensure harmonious employment relations. Managing Director for Asia
